Our miracle baby, Alvaro James (AJ) Garay, came into this world January 2, 2009 and left us broken-hearted on July 8, 2022. He was a fighter from the moment he was born and after two weeks in the NICU accomplished more than anyone expected. For 13 years he continually broke barriers and showed the world what he could do, who he was, and what life really meant.
In his short 13 years, he made an impact on everyone he met. His awesomeness radiated as soon as he walked into a room and will forever be felt. No matter what AJ was doing, he always had a smile on his face. If he taught you anything, it was to be happy, love with everything you had, and never give up no matter the odds.
Some of AJs favorite things were Mickey Mouse, roller coasters, pinwheels, trucks, music, anything outdoors, but most importantly his daddy, Spanky. “I give you big squeeze” was a common phrase to hear from AJ followed by a hug so strong it would take your breath away. Not only was AJ loved by many, he was cute which was usually accepted by an “I ammmmmm” and a smile.
With the love and support of his family, school, and community, his quality of life was immeasurable. His mommie never took no for an answer and knew AJ could accomplish anything he wanted; being his voice, advocate, and his biggest cheerleader. From the moment he came home, the community loved and accepted AJ for who he was and helped mold him into the young man he became. For 10 years his Aunt Barb was by his side and made sure he succeeded, not only at school but in life.
He will be missed by his parents, Alvaro and Jackie, his sisters; best friend Gabi, snuggler Alexa, protector Alayna and half-sister Angie. Grandparents Jim (Betty) Justice, Cindy Freeman, Juana Garay. Great Grandma Peggy Werbelow. Numerous Aunts, Uncles, Compas and Primos. He was preceded in death by his abuelito Julio Garay, uncles Cesar and Yuyo Garay, Uncle RayRay, Aunt Ember and Bumpy.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 13, 12pm to 4:30pm at Perkins Funeral Home with Memorial Mass to follow at 5pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Celebration of life will be Friday, July 15, at 2pm at Harlowton High School Gymnasium. Memorials may be made to the Montana Hope Project, PO Box 5927 Helena, MT 59604.
